TMJ, Bruxism & Myofacial Pain

TMJ, bruxism (clenching and grinding), and myofacial pain often occur when physical, mental, and emotional stresses are channelled into the muscles of the jaw and neck. Continued muscle tension can damage bone and cartilage, causing facial, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as headaches. Hypnosis, biofeedback, and behavioral therapy are effective methods of teaching people to reduce muscle tension and its consequent pain.

Dental & Needle Phobia

Many people are afraid to go to the dentist. Dental and/or needle phobia can actually be dangerous, resulting in severe dental problems. Most serious dental conditions can simply and painlessly be prevented by regular checkups and proper care. Overcoming these fears can easily be accomplished with the aid of biofeedback and/or hypnosis, thereby averting truly needless pain and dental complications.

Allergic Responses to Analgesics and Anesthetics

Some people must restrict their use of chemical analgesics and anesthetics. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis can be used to reduce or eliminate pain during and after dental procedures. Additional positive effects of the use of hypnosis include reduced bleeding and swelling.

Oral Surgery – Preparation & Recovery

Anticipation of oral surgery and the attendant pain of recovery often leads to stress and anxiety. Behavioral and hypnotic techniques can be used to alleviate pre- surgical anxiety. Hypnosis also can be used to reduce bleeding and pain during and after the procedure; decrease the need for surgical and post-operative pain medication; and hasten recovery time.

Dental Prostheses & Orthodontic Appliances

Discomfort from dental prostheses (dentures) and orthodontic appliances (braces, retainers) can be alleviated through behavioral techniques which reduce pain and diminish sensitivity. Counseling is often helpful for individuals who feel embarrassed regarding changes in their appearance caused by a prosthesis or appliance.

Breaking of Night Guards and other Orthodontic Appliances Due to Bruxism

Many dental patients destroy their orthodontic appliances by clenching their teeth while asleep. Hypnosis and counseling are excellent techniques to stop this costly behavior.

 Gagging

The natural reflex to protect the larynx and esophagus can become hypersensitive and cause uncontrollable gagging, thereby interfering with a person’s daily activities. Persons who suffer from this condition often avoid routine dental care. Biofeedback and hypnosis can be utilized to desensitize the reflex, and restore normal functioning.

Tobacco Use

When a dentist finds a pre-cancerous condition in a patient’s mouth, it is certainly time for that patient to become a non-user of tobacco. We would rather help people stop using this harmful and addictive substance before that ever happens. Hypnosis is widely accepted as a most effective means of breaking the tobacco habit.
